Uranium Mobilization from Peat in the Hessian Ried

The Scientific Training investigates uranium (U) concentrations and hydrogeochemical mechanisms controlling its mobilization to groundwater from peat-rich sediments associated with the paleo-meanders of the ancient Neckar River in the Hessian Ried, Germany. The research focuses on evaluating the influence of bicarbonate concentrations on the release of U. The study combines field sampling to identify a suitable study site with controlled batch leaching experiments and hydrochemical analyses. The improved understanding of U behaviour from this research will serve as the experimental foundation for my master's thesis, which will further investigate uranium mobilization through column leaching experiments under controlled conditions
