Introduction to Soil Science I (in German)
The module “Introduction to Soil Science I” includes a lecture part and an exercise part. The module teaches the basics of soil science, from soil development and soil functions to soil systematics. Within the lecture “Introduction to Soil Science” you will acquire basic knowledge about the formation of soil as well as soil-forming processes and soil degradation as well as the protection of soil functions. Furthermore, you will receive an introduction to the basics of biogeochemical processes in soils and the national soil systematics. In the tutorial “Soil science field course” following the lecture, you can directly apply your acquired basic knowledge in practice and further expand it. Using regional soils as an example, you will have the opportunity to practise identifying and documenting soils using the national and international soil systematics, and to take soil samples. In addition, you will acquire in-depth knowledge about the formation of soils in a spatio-temporal context.
Introduction to Soil Science II (in German)
The module “Introduction to Soil Science II” consists of a seminar with an exercise on the topic of soil mapping and site mapping. Within the module you have the possibility to deepen your preliminary knowledge of soil science, soil development and soil systematics. The module includes a seminar in which you learn the basics of soil mapping, its goals and processes, as well as the handling of soil maps. Afterwards you can directly apply your knowledge in several practical field exercises. During the field exercises we will explore soils in different soil landscapes. The aim of the exercise is to strengthen your practical skills in soil mapping and soil documentation, as well as to develop a deeper understanding of spatio-temporal and landscape relationships in soil formation.
Soil protection (in German)
The module “Soil Protection” comprises a seminar on the complex of topics of soil vulnerability, soil contamination and measures of soil protection. Knowledge about the global vulnerability of soil functions and protective measures as well as legal basics are communicated. Within the module, you will acquire in-depth knowledge on the assessment of soil threats and existing possibilities of preventive and remedial soil protection. The aim of the module is to understand the connections between human-environment relations and their effects on soils as well as to understand the possibilities but also the limitations of soil protection.
Soil science lab course (in German)
The “Soil Science Laboratory Course” focuses on the basics of soil science laboratory work. Within the scope of practical exercises, you will be given the opportunity to independently carry out laboratory analyses of standard soil parameters under supervision. The module is focused on the analysis of soil properties (e.g., soil texture, humus content, carbonate content), physical properties (e.g., soil density, soil pores) and chemical properties (e.g., pH value, carbon content, cation exchange capacity). The aim of the module is to train you in the basics of laboratory work and to develop your analytical skills for the investigation of soils.
