Microplastics in NABO Soils

The objective of this thesis is to analyse diverse soil samples obtained from the Swiss Soil Monitoring Network (NABO) for their microplastic contamination. The primary aim is to evaluate the quantity and properties of microplastics present in Swiss agricultural and grassland topsoils over the preceding 30 years. In order to accomplish this goal, soil samples from NABO's archive of three distinct observation phases will be examined.

Furthermore, the collected data series will be linked to comprehensive land use information collected at the respective sites over the entire sampling period. This study will provide valuable information not only to better assess the current status and temporal trends of microplastic accumulation in soils, but also to understand the role of land use in their accumulation.
