The Electron Crystallography Group is internationally positioned and connects the Johannes Gutenberg University (JGU) and the Technical University of Darmstadt (TU-DA). Our research covers biological, chemical, physical, and geoscientific topics.

„Crystals are like works of art, formed by nature according to fixed laws of structure and symmetry.“

René Just Haüy (1743-1822) „Father of crystallography“

Prof. Dr. Ute Kolb, Head of the Department of Electron Crystallography

Our lives are strongly influenced by crystalline materials. Knowledge of their atomic structure is fundamental to understanding the positive and negative effects of these materials, as well as to modifying or utilizing them.

Our Research

Our group focuses on the study of extremely small crystals in the range of a few hundred to tens of nanometers. We use electron beams and a new diffraction technique we developed ourselves. Our research topics range from biologically or geologically formed nanocrystals to synthetic and industrially produced particles, which may be as well found in air, water and soil, which in turn can also occur in air, water and soil.
