Researchers from TU Darmstadt and the University of Bern have successfully developped an innovative aproach to identify tire wear particles (TWP) in soil, addressing a significant gap in environmental microplastic data. The method combines microplastic extraction with optical microscopy and machine learning, allowing identification of TWP as small as 35 µm based on color. With a recovery rate of 85% and minimal interference from soil organic matter, this technique offers an accessible, cost-effective way to monitor TWP near roads and could be easily implemented in labs worldwide.
