Our Equipment

Hardware

The research work of our section requires efficient computer hardware. Several modern workstations are available, equipped with powerful graphics cards and processors as well as sufficient RAM and hard disk space to process and display even complex models quickly. For the calculation of larger numerical models, a computer server with 12 CPUs and 384 GB of RAM can be used. There is also access to the Lichtenberg high-performance computer at the TU Darmstadt.

Application examples

Our computer hardware is used, among other things, for

  • Statistical evaluation of fracture properties from photogrammetric data or data obtained by terrestrial laser scanner and their visualisation (Riscan Pro, CloudCompare, Agisoft).
  • Discrete Fracture Network models for the calculation of upscaled hydraulic-mechanical rock parameters (FracMan).
  • Generation of 3D geological subsurface models (Petrel, Skua-Gocad).
  • Generation of computational grids on which the calculation of numerical models is carried out using the finite element method, as well as the post-processing and visualisation of the results (RocScience, Ansys, Simulia Abaqus, HyperMesh, Tecplot, Eclipse, Visage, PetroMod).
