Microplastic sampling of high alpine soils and glaciers

Tour in the high alpine region

2025/07/23

In June 2025, members of the Soil Mineralogy and Soil Chemistry group, together with Prof. Dr. Stephan Weinbruch (Environmental Mineralogy) and the active support of Thomas Dirsch and others, were active in the Kaunertal (Austria) for a sampling campaign.

With the aim of measuring the atmospheric deposition of microplastics on glaciers and alpine soils, snow samples were taken in the “Kaunertal Glacier” ski area and on Austria's second largest glacier, the “Gepatschferner”. In addition, alpine soils at different stages of development were sampled in the glacier foreland of the Gepatschferner in order to investigate the temporal dynamics of atmospheric microplastic accumulation with the advancing soil development as a result of glacier retreat due to climate change. After labor-intensive days in the high alpine area between 2000 and 3500 m above sea level and the friendly support of the volunteer team of the Rauhekopfhütte around Stefan Ernst (DAV section Frankfurt/Main), the samples are now being analyzed in the laboratories of the Soil Mineralogy and Soil Chemistry group.
