Studying in Darmstadt

Study Geosciences in Darmstadt as an exchange student

International students can study for one or two semesters at the Institute of Applied Geosciences as part of a study exchange. While we of course teach geoscientific fundamentals in their entirety in our degree programs, our focus is clearly on applied geology and environmental geosciences. There are courses in German and English language. We offer a large number of courses with English as the language of instruction, particularly at master’s level. You can read about which subjects are offered in which language further down the page. We would be happy to support you in planning and preparing for an exchange semester with us!

Why come to Darmstadt as a Geoscience exchange student?

The geosciences at TU Darmstadt are one of the few geoscience university institutes with a strong focus on applied geosciences (hydrogeology, engineering geology, geothermal energy, environmental processes in water, soil and atmosphere). The technical university with its proximity to the engineering disciplines offers the ideal environment for this. We offer modules and courses in the following subjects that can be attended by exchange students (language of instruction: DE = German, EN = English):

  • Geology, regional geology (DE)
  • Sedimentary geology (DE, EN)
  • Geoinformation systems (DE, EN)
  • Engineering geology (DE)
  • Geothermal energy (DE)
  • Hydrogeology (DE, EN)
  • Hydrochemistry, groundwater pollutants (EN)
  • Groundwater modelling, geochemical modelling (EN)
  • Soil science, soil mineralogy (DE, EN)
  • Soil biogeochemistry (EN)
  • Atmosphere and aerosols (DE)
  • Environmental research (DE)
  • Laboratory and field courses (DE, EN)

Which courses are offered in the winter or summer semester is specified in the study plan (see link on the right). For orientation, you can also look through the offerings from previous semesters in the course catalogue in TUCaN. Since course offerings can change at short notice, be sure to get advice from our international studies coordinator (see below) before coming to Darmstadt, or before setting up your Learning Agreement, respectively.
