Multi-proxy investigations of lacustrine sediments of the Holocene from the Layla Lakes in Saudi Arabia
The Layla lakes, named after the nearby city of Layla, are located about 300 km south of Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia. These lakes, which have now fallen dry, were formed by the hypogenic karstification of the Upper Jurassic Hith anhydrite and subsequent collapse of the overlying Cretaceous strata, creating a series of up to 40 m deep sinkholes.
