Field trips

The Department of Applied Sedimentary Geology offers a number of excursions. The types of excursions range from simple day trips to stays abroad lasting several weeks. It should be noted that not all excursions take place regularly. If in doubt, please always get in touch with the relevant contact person from the department.

Day excursion Mainzer Becken

The Mainz Basin was a 50m deep bay, which existed around 38 to 12 Ma ago and connected the former North Sea with the Paratethys. In terms of landscape and climatic conditions, tropical to subtropical conditions prevailed at this time. The annual temperature was 18 ° C and thus much higher than today, comparable to today's Caribbean.

Main terrain exercise I

The main terrain exercise I takes place in June / July and is part of the "Field exercises I" module. It is compulsory in the 4th semester of the bachelor's degree. Requirements for participation are the passed exams Geology I, Geology II, Geology IV and Geological Maps and Sections. Just enter yourself in the list (on the black board on the ground floor of the main entrance to the institute) and register via TUCaN if you have completed these modules or are expected to complete them by the end of the summer semester.

Geological mapping course II

Nach dem einführenden Kartierkurs I, betreut das Fachgebiet Angewandte Sedimentgeologie v.a. den Kartierkurs II. Dieser findet in der Regel auf Fuerteventura statt, wo neben einer Vielzahl vulkanischer, subvulkanischer und plutonischer Gesteine vielfältige marine, äolische und alluviale Sedimente kartiert und beschrieben werden können. Alternativ wird der Kartierkurs II in den westlichen Karnischen Alpen in Österreich durchgeführt, wo leicht metamorphe altpaläozoische Sedimentabfolgen mit komplexer Tektonik kartiert werden.

Geophysical field internship

The course imparts knowledge of the fundamentals of applied, near-surface geophysics. The aim is to acquire the ability to independently carry out geophysical measurement methods and to assess their areas of application. Course content: Introduction to the basics of geophysics and the measuring methods geoelectrics, geomagnetics and georadar. Practical work with the devices and data evaluation.

Ground-penetrating radar internship

Ground penetrating radar is a near-surface, electromagnetic reflection method that provides structural images of the structure of the subsurface. This geophysical method is increasingly used in engineering offices for quality assurance and non-destructive exploration in the construction and environmental sectors. But the method is also used as a tool in many projects at research institutes for which high-resolution knowledge of the underground structures is a prerequisite.

Sedimentological internship

The sedimentological internship provides you with the necessary knowledge and skills that you will constantly need for your final thesis and in your later job as a geologist (m / f / d) for practical field work and its expert preparation.

Field course sequence stratigraphy

Within a three days field course the students get trained in sediment analysis and the application of sequence stratigraphic concepts. In selected outcrops the students apply sediment facies analysis, sketch outcrop walls, and measure spectral gamma ray and magnetic susceptibility. The data will be integrated, graphically presented and interpreted regarding reservoir quality. The case studies are from the epicontinental Triassic and Jurassic sediments of the Germanic Basin and the marginal North Alpine Foreland Basin.

China Summerschool

Also referred to as “Mesozoic Pompeii” due to their abundance of fossils, the sediments of the Jehol group from the Lower Cretaceous in northeastern China are one of the world's most important fossil deposits. The deposits provide a unique insight into the so-called Jehol biota and its paleoecology. In addition to numerous finds of fossil plants, invertebrates and vertebrates terrestrial and limnic communities, the localities are famous for the findings of feathered dinosaurs.
