Scholarships – Application Process

The TU Darmstadt does not issue scholarships. If you need a scholarship, you need to apply for one before you apply for enrollment in the TropHEE programme, for instance at the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service, s. below). Please keep in mind that the application procedure for scholarships usually takes several months.

DAAD Scholarship

TropHEE is part of the DAAD scholarship programme for postgraduate courses with relevance to developing and transforming countries.

Duration of funding: 24 months

Application deadline: September 30th (date of receipt at the university).
Deadline refers to the year before students intend to start the programme.

Prerequisites for a DAAD scholarship:

(1) B.Sc. certificate above average and not older than 6 years

(2) the applicant has not completed a master degree so far

(3) minimum of 2 years practical experience, primarily in the field of water and preferably outside the university

(4) the applicant intends to return to her/his home country after his studies where she/he ideally has a guaranteed job position

Required documents:

  • signed CV with current date (please use the sample europass form)
  • signed letter of motivation with current date (with reference to current occupation and choice of postgraduate programme(s), max. 2 pages) with current date.
    Important: when applying for more than one postgraduate course (max. 3 courses), you have to submit one motivation letter explaining why you are applying for these specific courses and why you chose that priority
  • letter of recommendation of current date from your current employer with letterhead, signature and official stamp (not in a sealed envelope)
  • certificate(s) of employment from the employer(s) that proof a minimum of two years of relevant working experience (after the bachelor degree) at the time of application and if possible, a guarantee of re-employment from your current employer upon returning home
  • certified copies of academic degrees (certified translation if necessary)
  • certified copies of academic transcripts, incl. grading-scale (certified translation if necessary)
  • applicants from the People’s Republic of China are asked to submit an APS Certificate with their application documents
  • proof of English language skills: IELTS or TOEFL (institutional TOEFL is not accepted)

Selection process: the final decision on the allocation of scholarships is made by the DAAD. The selection process at all postgraduate courses supported by the DAAD will last from October until February.

Scholarships at TU Darmstadt for enrolled TropHEE students:

  • Deutschlandstipendium for freshmen or 2nd semester students (application period: starts every year in September)

Country-specific funding:

  • COLFUTURO scholarship for students from Columbia
  • GNPC foundation scholarship of the Ghana National Petroleum Cooperation
